Nadir

/ˈneɪdɪr/ noun

Definition

The lowest point; the point of greatest adversity; in astronomy, the point directly below the observer, opposite the zenith.

Etymology

From Arabic 'naẓīr' (opposite), short for 'naẓīr as-samt' (opposite the zenith). Astronomers borrowed the concept of the lowest possible point from Arabic stargazers.

The absolute BOTTOM! Arabic astronomers gave us this word for the point directly beneath your feet — the lowest point in the sky. When life hits its nadir, the only direction left is UP! Arabic gave English its compass! ⬇️🧭
