Etymology
From French 'nationalisme' coined in the 1790s during the French Revolution, derived from 'nation' (from Latin 'natio' meaning birth or origin) plus the suffix '-ism.' The concept emerged as monarchies gave way to nation-states in the 18th-19th centuries.
