Nekton

/ˈnɛktən/ noun

Definition

Actively swimming aquatic organisms that can move independently of water currents, including fish, squid, marine mammals, and sea turtles. These animals have sufficient swimming ability to control their position in the water column.

Etymology

From Greek 'nektos' meaning 'swimming' or 'able to swim'. The term was introduced by marine biologists to distinguish strong swimmers from drifting plankton.

Kelly Says

Unlike plankton that drift with currents, nekton are the ocean's athletes who can swim against strong currents and migrate thousands of miles! Some tuna can swim at speeds of 70 mph, making them faster than most cars in city traffic.
