Definition
An abnormal growth of tissue that results from uncontrolled cell division. Neoplasms can be benign or malignant and represent any new and abnormal growth that serves no physiological function.
Etymology
From Greek 'neos' meaning new and 'plasma' meaning formation or molded thing. The term was coined in the 1860s by German pathologist Rudolf Virchow to describe abnormal tissue growths, emphasizing their nature as 'new formations.'
