Another term for chip-time, representing the actual time spent covering the race distance from start line to finish line. This excludes any time spent waiting to cross the start line after the official race start.
Etymology
'Net' comes from Latin 'nitidus' meaning clean or pure, evolving to mean 'after deductions' in accounting, while 'time' derives from Old English 'tima.' The term emphasizes the 'pure' running time without start-line delays.

Net-time became crucial as road races exploded in popularity - the 1970 Boston Marathon had 1,000 runners, but by 2000 it had 20,000! Without net-time measurement, a fast runner starting in the back could appear much slower than their actual performance.
