Nevermore

/ˌnɛvərˈmɔr/ adverb

Definition

Never again; at no time in the future; forever ceasing or stopping.

Etymology

Combination of 'never' (Old English 'næfre') and 'more' (Old English 'mare'). The compound became popular in Middle English and was especially immortalized in Edgar Allan Poe's 1845 poem 'The Raven.'

Kelly Says

Poe's raven repeating 'Nevermore' is so powerful that this old-fashioned phrase is still famous today—one poem basically froze an archaic word in the cultural memory for 180 years!
