Night

/naɪt/ noun

Definition

The time of day when it is dark outside, between sunset and sunrise. It is usually when people sleep and many animals become quiet or active, depending on the species.

Etymology

From Old English 'niht', related to German 'Nacht' and Latin 'nox', all meaning 'night'. It is an ancient Indo-European word that has changed very little.

Kelly Says

For most of human history, night was a time of danger and mystery, lit only by fire and stars. Many myths, fears, and celebrations—from werewolves to fireworks—grow out of how humans have responded to the dark.
