Definition
A very frightening or unpleasant dream. It can also mean any extremely bad or stressful situation in real life.
Etymology
From 'night' + 'mare', where 'mare' comes from Old English 'mære', an evil spirit believed to sit on people’s chests and cause bad dreams. Over time the word shifted from the spirit to the bad dream itself.
Kelly Says
A nightmare was once thought to be a real creature pressing on your chest while you slept, not just a dream. We still use the word for real-life experiences—like 'a traffic nightmare'—when they feel as suffocating as a bad dream.
