Nose-tackle

/noʊz ˈtækəl/ noun

Definition

A defensive lineman positioned directly over the center in certain defensive formations. The nose tackle's job is to occupy multiple blockers and clog running lanes up the middle.

Etymology

From 'nose' indicating their position directly in front of the center (at the 'nose' of the formation) and 'tackle' describing their role on the defensive line. The position became prominent with the rise of 3-4 defensive schemes in the 1970s.

Kelly Says

Nose tackles are the unsung heroes of defense, often facing double-team blocks on every play while receiving little statistical recognition. Players like Vince Wilfork proved that the position requires incredible technique and leverage, not just size, to control the line of scrimmage.
