Definition
Plural of notch, referring to V-shaped cuts or indentations, or points on a scale of measurement or achievement.
Etymology
From Anglo-French noche, possibly from Old French ochier 'to notch.' The word may be related to 'nock' (the groove in an arrow). Originally described physical cuts or marks, later extended to metaphorical levels or degrees.
Kelly Says
Notches served as humanity's earliest data storage system - from tally sticks recording debts to gunfighters' notched pistol grips counting victories. This physical method of record-keeping lives on in phrases like 'move up a notch' or 'take it down a notch,' showing how tactile experiences become abstract concepts.
