Noyade

/nwaˈjɑːd/ noun

Definition

A mass execution by drowning, especially those carried out during the French Revolution at Nantes.

Etymology

From French 'noyade' (drowning), from 'noyer' (to drown). Jean-Baptiste Carrier organized these mass drownings in the Loire in 1793-94. A dark word for a dark chapter.

Kelly Says

One of history's darkest words — mass drownings during the French Revolution. I include it because words must also remember humanity's worst moments. Language preserves both beauty AND horror as warnings. 🕊️📜
