Definition
The process by which atomic nuclei are created from protons and neutrons, occurring in the early universe (Big Bang nucleosynthesis) and in stellar cores (stellar nucleosynthesis). This process is responsible for creating all elements heavier than hydrogen.
Etymology
Formed from 'nucleus' (from Latin meaning 'kernel') and 'synthesis' (from Greek meaning 'putting together'). The term emerged in the 1940s-50s as physicists began understanding how elements form in stars and the early universe.
