Definition
The reduction or absence of emotional responsiveness, often experienced as feeling disconnected from positive and negative emotions alike. This symptom is commonly seen in depression, PTSD, and as a side effect of certain medications.
Etymology
From Old English 'niman' (to take, seize), evolving to describe the taking away of sensation or feeling. The psychological use emerged in the mid-20th century to describe emotional states parallel to physical numbness.
Kelly Says
Emotional numbing often affects positive emotions more than negative ones, which is why people with depression may still feel sadness but lose the ability to experience joy or pleasure - a phenomenon that helps explain why simply 'thinking positive' doesn't cure depression. This selective numbing occurs because different neurotransmitter systems regulate different emotional experiences.
