Numinosity

/ˌnuːmɪˈnɒsɪti/ noun

Definition

The quality of being filled with a supernatural or spiritual presence that inspires awe, fear, and fascination simultaneously. A sense of encountering something wholly other and divine.

Etymology

Coined by German theologian Rudolf Otto from Latin 'numen' (divine power or presence). Otto developed this concept to describe the non-rational aspect of religious experience that transcends ordinary emotional categories.

Kelly Says

Numinosity represents one of humanity's most ancient emotional responses - the recognition of something greater than ourselves. Neuroscientists find that numinous experiences activate the brain's default mode network differently, temporarily dissolving the sense of self and creating feelings of cosmic connection.
