Olympics

/əˈlɪmpɪks/ noun

Definition

An international multi-sport event held every four years, featuring summer and winter competitions. The modern version revived the ancient Greek Olympic Games.

Etymology

From Greek 'Olympikos' referring to Olympia, the sanctuary in ancient Greece where the original games were held from 776 BCE. Named after Mount Olympus, home of the Greek gods, connecting athletic achievement with divine aspiration.

Kelly Says

The Olympic flame tradition, now iconic to the games, was actually a Nazi propaganda invention for the 1936 Berlin Olympics, designed to connect Hitler's regime with ancient Greek glory. The five interlocking rings represent the inhabited continents and were designed to include at least one color from every national flag.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Women excluded from ancient Olympics entirely; modern inclusion only since 1900, with systematic barriers, fewer events, and unequal media coverage.

Inclusive Usage

Acknowledge equal participation and achievement across genders. Avoid defaulting to male competitors as the standard.

Empowerment Note

Women athletes have achieved parity in Olympic participation and continue setting world records across sports, though media recognition remains unequal.
