Oranges

/ˈɔːrɪndʒɪz/ noun

Definition

Round citrus fruits with thick orange skin and sweet-tart juice inside; or the color between red and yellow.

Etymology

From Sanskrit 'naranga,' traveled through Arabic 'nāranj' and Old French 'orenge.' The 'n' was lost in English, and the word became confused with the color orange after the fruit.

Kelly Says

English speakers accidentally deleted the 'n' from 'naranja' so much that eventually people forgot it was ever there—the color orange is basically named after this fruit, but the fruit came first!
