Definition
In Greek mythology, the son of Agamemnon who avenges his father's murder by killing his mother Clytemnestra, a story exploring themes of justice and family duty.
Etymology
From Ancient Greek 'Orestos' (Ὀρέστης), possibly derived from 'ore' meaning 'mountain.' Orestes appears in many classical Greek dramas including Aeschylus's Oresteia, making him one of literature's most complex tragic figures.
Kelly Says
Orestes is one of the first characters in Western literature to explore mental illness—after killing his mother, he's haunted by the Furies and experiences what we'd now call trauma and psychosis, making ancient Greek drama surprisingly modern in its psychology!
