Definition
The large opening at the top of a sponge through which water exits after flowing through the sponge's body. It represents the end point of the sponge's water circulation system used for feeding and respiration.
Etymology
From Latin 'osculum' meaning little mouth, diminutive of 'os' meaning mouth. Despite the name, it's actually an exit rather than an entrance, named by early naturalists who thought it resembled a mouth opening.
Kelly Says
The osculum is like a sponge's exhaust pipe - all the water that enters through thousands of tiny pores gets funneled out through this single opening! You can actually see the current of water shooting out if you watch carefully underwater.
