A data point that lies significantly outside the expected range or pattern of other observations. Outliers can indicate measurement errors, rare events, or important exceptions to general patterns.
Etymology
Compound of 'out' and 'lier' (one who lies). Originally meant someone living outside a community or boundaries. Statistical usage emerged in the mid-1900s to describe data points that 'lie outside' the main distribution pattern, borrowing the geographic metaphor of being beyond normal boundaries.
