Overdose

/ˈoʊvərdoʊs/ noun, verb

Definition

A dangerously large amount of a drug or substance taken at once, or to take such an amount.

Etymology

From French 'over-' (beyond) combined with 'dose' from Greek 'dosis' (something given). The medical term emerged in the 19th century as drug use became more widespread.

Kelly Says

The word 'dose' comes from ancient Greek medical language, and 'overdose' is literally 'over-giving'—which is why doctors still use 'dosage' when prescribing, to ensure you get the right amount, not too much.
