Definition
To become too hot or to make something hotter than is safe or desirable; to reach dangerous temperature levels.
Etymology
From English prefix 'over-' (excessively) combined with 'heat' (Old English 'hæte'). The compound term became common with industrial machinery in the 19th century.
Kelly Says
Computer processors overheat when doing intense calculations because silicon transistors generate incredible heat in tiny spaces—this is why modern CPUs need sophisticated cooling systems, and why your phone warns you to stop using it when it gets too hot.
