Definition
Overtime is extra time spent working beyond normal hours, or in sports, extra time added when the game is tied.
Etymology
From “over” and “time,” first used for extra working hours in the 19th century. Its use in sports developed later from the same idea of time beyond the usual limit.
Kelly Says
Overtime is time that breaks the boundary: the workday or the game should be over, but it isn’t. In both jobs and sports, overtime feels intense because everyone knows they’ve crossed into bonus—or pressure—time.

Ethical Language Guidance
Gender History
Overtime work interacts with gendered expectations around unpaid care and domestic labor, which women have disproportionately shouldered. This has affected who can take paid overtime and how it is valued.
Inclusive Usage
When discussing overtime, consider both paid and unpaid labor and avoid assuming who is available for extra paid hours based on gender.
Inclusive Alternatives
["extra hours","extended work hours"]
Empowerment Note
Acknowledge women’s dual burden of paid work and unpaid overtime in the home, and the advocacy that led to labor protections.
