Pacific

/pəˈsɪfɪk/ adjective

Definition

Pacific means peaceful or calm, and it is also the name of the world’s largest ocean.

Etymology

From Latin *pacificus* meaning “peace‑making,” from *pax* “peace” and *facere* “to make.” The Pacific Ocean was named *Mare Pacificum* (“peaceful sea”) by explorer Ferdinand Magellan because of its calm waters at the time.

Kelly Says

It’s ironic that the ‘peaceful’ Pacific Ocean is home to some of the planet’s strongest storms and most violent tectonic activity. The word shows how names often capture one moment or viewpoint, not the full reality.
