Pantomime

/ˈpæntəmaɪm/ noun

Definition

A dramatic performance using gestures without words; a traditional British Christmas entertainment featuring fairy tales with music and audience participation.

Etymology

From Latin 'pantomimus', from Greek 'pantomimos' meaning 'imitator of all', from 'pan-' (all) and 'mimos' (mime). Originally referred to Roman entertainers who performed stories through gesture alone, later evolving into the distinctly British theatrical tradition.

Kelly Says

Pantomime proves that human communication transcends language - skilled mimes can convey complex emotions and narratives using only their bodies. The British Christmas panto tradition, with its cross-dressing actors and audience shouting 'He's behind you!', shows how this ancient art form adapted to become participatory family entertainment.
