Definition
The process of analyzing a string of symbols or text according to formal grammar rules to understand its structure and meaning. In programming, parsing converts source code or data into a format the computer can process.
Etymology
From Latin 'pars' meaning 'part,' originally used in grammar to describe breaking sentences into grammatical components. In computing since the 1960s, it evolved to mean breaking any structured text into meaningful parts that programs can understand.
Kelly Says
Parsing is like being a detective reading a foreign language - you need to figure out where each word begins and ends, what each symbol means, and how they all fit together! Every time you type code, a parser is working behind the scenes to make sense of your syntax.
