Definition
Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that focuses on the health and medical care of babies, children, and teenagers. Doctors who specialize in this field are called pediatricians.
Etymology
“Pediatrics” comes from Greek *pais, paidos*, meaning “child,” and *iatros*, meaning “doctor” or “healer.” It literally means “healing of children.”
Kelly Says
Pediatrics is one of the few medical fields named not after a body part or disease, but after a kind of person—children. The word itself reminds doctors who their real focus is: growing humans, not just small bodies. It’s medicine organized around a stage of life.

Ethical Language Guidance
Gender History
Pediatrics, like many care-focused medical fields, has been feminized in cultural perception, with women overrepresented among pediatric nurses and increasingly among pediatricians but underrepresented in senior leadership. Care work has often been undervalued economically despite its importance.
Inclusive Usage
Use gender-neutral language for pediatric professionals and avoid assuming pediatricians are women or that caregiving is naturally female. Refer to “pediatricians” or “pediatric staff” without gendered assumptions.
Inclusive Alternatives
["child health medicine","pediatric medicine"]
Empowerment Note
Women pediatricians, nurses, and researchers have significantly advanced child health, vaccination programs, and family-centered care, often without full recognition.
