Pentagram

/ˈpɛntəˌɡræm/ noun

Definition

A five-pointed star formed by connecting the vertices of a regular pentagon, creating interlacing triangles. Used as a symbol in various religious, magical, and mathematical contexts throughout history.

Etymology

From Greek 'pentagrammon' meaning 'five-lined,' composed of 'pente' (five) + 'gramma' (line). Ancient Greeks discovered its mathematical properties, and it became associated with the Pythagoreans who saw divine proportion in its geometry.

Kelly Says

The pentagram is mathematics made mystical - its proportions naturally contain the golden ratio, which the Greeks considered divinely perfect. Fascinating how the same symbol has represented everything from Christian protection (five wounds of Christ) to pagan elements (earth, air, fire, water, spirit) to modern occultism, showing how geometry transcends cultural interpretation.
