Performances

/pərˈfɔrmənsəz/ noun

Definition

Acts of presenting entertainment, music, or drama before an audience. Also refers to how well someone or something functions or executes a task.

Etymology

From Old French 'parfournir' meaning 'to accomplish', from 'par-' (completely) + 'fournir' (to furnish). Originally meant 'completion of an action' before developing theatrical connotations in the 16th century.

Kelly Says

The word performance captures both artistic expression and measurable results, showing how human activity bridges creativity and efficiency. In theater, a 'performance' can be both a single show and an actor's quality of work - the same word measuring both occurrence and excellence.
