Perigynous

/pəˈrɪdʒɪnəs/ adjective

Definition

Describing flowers where the sepals, petals, and stamens are attached around the ovary at the same level, typically on a cup-like structure called a hypanthium. The ovary appears to be at the same level as or slightly below the other floral parts.

Etymology

From Greek 'peri' meaning around or surrounding and 'gyne' meaning woman or female, literally meaning 'around the female parts.' This term describes the intermediate position of floral organs in relation to the ovary.

Kelly Says

Perigynous flowers are like nature's amphitheater - the ovary sits in the center stage while the sepals, petals, and stamens form a circle around it at the same level, creating a perfect ring of floral parts!
