Phlebitis

/flɪˈbaɪtɪs/ noun

Definition

Inflammation of a vein, typically in the legs, causing pain, swelling, and redness along the affected vessel. When associated with blood clot formation, it's called thrombophlebitis.

Etymology

From Greek 'phlebo' meaning 'vein' and '-itis' meaning 'inflammation.' The term emerged in medical literature during the 18th century as understanding of vascular anatomy improved.

Kelly Says

Superficial phlebitis often looks like a red, tender cord under the skin - you can literally trace the inflamed vein with your finger. While painful, it's usually not dangerous, unlike deep vein thrombosis which can send clots to the lungs.
