Phlox

/flɑks/ noun

Definition

A colorful garden flower with clusters of small, fragrant blooms in pink, purple, white, or red.

Etymology

From Greek 'phlox' (flame), because the flowers' colors resembled flickering flames. Linnaeus chose this name for the flower genus in the 1700s.

Kelly Says

Phlox flowers are master manipulators—they make different colors that attract different pollinators: butterflies prefer red ones while hummingbirds prefer pink ones at different times.
