Definition
A reproduction of a document or image made using a photocopying machine. As a verb, to make such a reproduction using light and electrostatic processes.
Etymology
From Greek 'photos' (light) and Latin 'copia' (abundance, copy), coined in the mid-20th century with the invention of xerographic copying technology by Chester Carlson in 1938.
Kelly Says
The photocopy revolutionized information sharing so dramatically that Xerox became a generic verb, though the company fought hard to protect its trademark. Interestingly, early photocopies were considered so perfect that they raised concerns about counterfeiting currency and documents.
