Semi-aquatic marine mammals including seals, sea lions, and walruses that have flippers and divide their time between water and land. They are excellent swimmers and divers.

Etymology

From Latin 'pinna' meaning 'fin' or 'feather' and 'ped' meaning 'foot', literally 'fin-footed'. The term was coined in the 19th century to describe these flipper-footed marine mammals.
