Definition
A small gun that you hold in one hand, usually with bullets.
Etymology
From Czech 'píšťala' or French 'pistolet,' possibly derived from the city of Pistoia in Italy where guns were manufactured. The term became common in English in the 1600s.
Kelly Says
The pistol might actually be named after Pistoia, Italy, which was a major weapon-making center—place names hidden in common words are language's little time capsules!
