Plantations

/plænˈteɪʃənz/ noun

Definition

Large agricultural estates where crops are cultivated, historically associated with slave labor in the American South.

Etymology

From Latin 'plantare' meaning to plant, through Old French. Originally meant any planted area, but became specifically associated with colonial agricultural systems using enslaved labor.

Kelly Says

The word 'plantation' carries the terrible irony of human history - it suggests the nurturing act of planting and growing, yet became synonymous with some of humanity's cruelest institutions.
