Podium

/ˈpoʊdiəm/ noun

Definition

A raised platform where medal winners stand during award ceremonies, typically with three levels for first, second, and third place. It can also refer to finishing in the top three positions of a competition.

Etymology

From Latin 'podium' meaning 'elevated place,' from Greek 'podion' meaning 'little foot' (base or foundation). Originally used in architecture for building foundations, it evolved to mean any raised platform by the 1700s.

Kelly Says

The Olympic podium design changes for each Games, but the height difference between levels is standardized—first place stands 8 inches higher than second, and second place is 4 inches above third! This creates the iconic stepped silhouette that makes the gold medalist literally and figuratively stand above the rest.
