Polk

/poʊk/ noun

Definition

A style of lively folk dance and music, or referring to James K. Polk, the 11th U.S. President.

Etymology

The dance polka comes from Czech 'pulka' (half-step), referring to the half-step tempo of the dance. It originated in Bohemia in the early 19th century and became wildly popular across Europe.

Kelly Says

The polka is one of the few dance crazes that actually has a documented inventor—it was created around 1830 by a Czech peasant and servant girl, then exploded in popularity when the Vienna nobility adopted it!
