Definition
Small, usually benign growths that stick out from the lining of your body, especially in the colon or throat.
Etymology
From Greek polypous (many-footed), used for sea creatures with tentacles. Applied to medical growths because of their similar protruding shape.
Kelly Says
Colorectal polyps are one of medicine's great success stories—routine screening catches precancerous polyps before they become dangerous, preventing thousands of cancers annually.
