Lacking sufficient money to live at a standard considered comfortable or normal. Can also mean of low quality or deserving of sympathy.

Etymology

From Old French povre, from Latin pauper meaning "poor, not wealthy." Related to paucus "few, little" and parere "to produce." Entered English in the 12th century.
