Porch

/pɔːrtʃ/ noun

Definition

A porch is a covered area attached to the entrance of a house or building, often with a floor and sometimes with walls or railings. People use porches to sit, relax, and move between indoors and outdoors.

Etymology

From Old French *porche*, from Latin *porticus* “colonnade, covered walk,” from *porta* “gate.” It originally referred to grand covered entryways before becoming more domestic.

Kelly Says

Porches are architectural “in-between” spaces—not quite inside, not quite outside. Many cultures use them as social filters, where neighbors can casually meet without fully entering each other’s private space.
