Definition
Relating to the Praetorian Guard, the elite military unit that served as personal bodyguards to Roman emperors. The term also refers to the corrupt political influence and power struggles associated with this guard.
Etymology
From Latin 'praetorianus,' derived from 'praetor' (a high-ranking magistrate) and originally referring to a general's bodyguard. The Praetorian Guard was established by Augustus around 27 BCE to protect the emperor.

The Praetorian Guard became the ultimate power behind the throne, assassinating at least 13 Roman emperors and auctioning off the imperial title to the highest bidder in 193 CE! They were so dangerous that Emperor Constantine finally disbanded them in 312 CE. Today, 'praetorian' describes any elite group that wields disproportionate political influence behind the scenes.
