Precincts

/ˈpriːsɪŋkts/ noun

Definition

Defined areas or districts, especially for administrative purposes like voting or policing; also refers to the area surrounding a building or institution.

Etymology

From Latin 'praecinctus', past participle of 'praecingere' meaning 'to gird about, encircle'. The root combines 'prae-' (before) and 'cingere' (to gird), originally referring to an encircled or bounded area.

Kelly Says

Police precincts got their name from the idea of 'girding' or encircling a territory with protection - the same root gives us 'cincture' (a belt) and 'succinct' (originally meaning 'girded up'). The concept of defining territory through boundaries is fundamental to both governance and architecture.
