Preconscious

/priˈkɑnʃəs/ noun

Definition

The level of mental activity containing thoughts and memories that are not currently in conscious awareness but can be easily brought into consciousness when needed. This serves as a bridge between conscious and unconscious material.

Etymology

From Latin 'prae-' meaning 'before' and 'conscius' meaning 'knowing.' Freud introduced this concept in the 1890s to describe mental content that exists 'before consciousness' - available but not currently active in awareness.

Kelly Says

The preconscious is like your mind's waiting room where thoughts hang out until you need them - your childhood phone number is sitting there patiently until someone asks for it, then suddenly it pops into consciousness!
