Presumption

/prɪˈzʌmpʃən/ noun

Definition

An assumption based on reasonable evidence; arrogant or impertinent behavior; a legal principle assuming something is true until proven otherwise.

Etymology

From Latin praesumptio, from praesumere meaning 'to take beforehand'. Combined prae (before) and sumere (to take). The arrogance sense developed from 'taking too much upon oneself'.

Kelly Says

Presumption beautifully captures how assumptions can be both reasonable (legal presumption of innocence) and problematic (presumptuous behavior) - it's all about whether you're taking the right amount beforehand!
