Pretoria

/prɪˈtɔːriə/ proper noun

Definition

The executive capital city of South Africa, located in the northern part of the country. One of three capital cities alongside Cape Town and Bloemfontein.

Etymology

Named after Andries Pretorius, a Voortrekker leader who led Boer forces to victory at the Battle of Blood River in 1838. The city was founded in 1855 and named in his honor, with the Latin suffix '-ia' meaning 'place of'.

Kelly Says

Pretoria is famous for its 70,000 jacaranda trees that bloom purple every October, earning it the nickname 'Jacaranda City.' The city uniquely serves as the administrative capital while sharing national capital duties with two other cities, making South Africa one of the few countries with multiple capitals.
