Prides

/praɪdz/ noun

Definition

Groups of lions; plural of pride; also the plural of the emotion of pride, meaning feelings of satisfaction or self-respect.

Etymology

From Old English 'pryde'. For lions, 'pride' became the collective noun sometime in the 1600s, possibly because of the animal's regal bearing.

Kelly Says

A pride of lions is one of the few big cat groupings that live together, and the name perfectly captures how they're viewed as royalty—meanwhile, a 'gang' of badgers or an 'obstinacy' of buffalo sound way less dignified.
