Psychopathic

/ˌsaɪkəˈpæθɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to a mental condition where a person shows little empathy, manipulates others, and may act without guilt or remorse.

Etymology

From Greek 'psykhé' (mind) and 'pathos' (suffering, emotion). Originally coined in psychiatry in the 1800s as 'psychopathy.' The term describes a specific personality disorder, not just general 'craziness.'

Kelly Says

Psychopathy is different from psychosis—people with psychopathy often seem completely normal and are excellent at reading others' emotions while having none themselves. They're the 'charming predators' that psychologists study, not the 'crazy killers' that Hollywood shows.
