Definition
Students in school, or the black circular openings in the center of the eyes that control light entry.
Etymology
From Latin 'pupilla,' diminutive of 'pupa' meaning 'girl, doll.' Called this because you can see a tiny reflection of yourself in someone else's pupil, like a little doll. The student meaning came from the idea of being under someone's care.
Kelly Says
The eye's pupil was named after the tiny reflection you see of yourself in another person's eye - ancient people thought this looked like a small doll or child. This same 'little person' concept gave us the student meaning, as pupils are 'little people' under a teacher's guidance.
