Rap

/ræp/ noun

Definition

A sharp blow or knock, or a type of rhythmic spoken music over beats. Can also mean criticism or blame.

Etymology

From Middle English 'rappen' meaning 'to strike quickly'. The musical sense emerged in African American communities in the 1970s, possibly from 'rapping' (talking) or from the percussive nature of the vocal delivery.

Kelly Says

The evolution of 'rap' from a simple word meaning 'to knock' to a revolutionary musical genre shows how language reflects cultural innovation. Hip-hop's 'rap' transformed global music and gave voice to urban experiences, making it one of the most influential cultural exports of the late 20th century.
