Rats

/ræts/ noun

Definition

Small to medium-sized rodents with long tails, pointed snouts, and prominent teeth. Often considered pests but also used in scientific research.

Etymology

From Old English ræt, of uncertain origin, possibly from Proto-Germanic rattaz. May be related to the gnawing sound they make or their habit of 'rooting' around.

Kelly Says

Rats are incredibly empathetic animals - they'll free trapped companions even when offered chocolate as an alternative reward. They also laugh when tickled, producing ultrasonic giggles that humans need special equipment to hear.
